Guide to predicting the 2026 World Cup group stage

The group stage is where a good pool is built: lots of matches, and every correct call adds up. These tips help you get the most out of it.

Predict realistic scorelines

In the group stage, getting the result right pays the most. Tight scores like 1–0, 2–1 or 1–1 are far more common than blowouts. Predicting a 4–0 might feel exciting, but statistically you're giving away points.

Watch each team's opening match

A team's first match in the tournament is usually the most cautious: nobody wants to start with a loss. That's why draws and tight results are common on the first matchday. Keep it in mind before predicting early blowouts.

Favorites don't always run riot

Big national teams usually win, but rarely by lopsided scores against organized opponents. Predicting that a favorite wins 1–0 or 2–0 gets the result right more often than betting on a 3–0 or 4–0.

The final matchday is special

On the third and final group matchday, some teams are already through or eliminated, and that changes their approach: rotations, open games or teams happy with a draw. If you follow the pre-match news, you can anticipate surprises.

⏱️ Remember: each prediction locks when the match starts. Make your matchday picks with time to spare so you don't miss any.

Don't leave matches unpredicted

There are dozens of matches in the group stage. Each one you leave unpredicted is a point your rivals can earn and you can't. Even if you have no read on a fixture, a conservative prediction always beats leaving it blank.

Build your lead early

Whoever scores consistently in the group stage reaches the knockouts with a cushion. You don't need to nail exact scores all the time: getting results right regularly already builds a solid base to fight for the group.
